Wolf Awareness Week Activities at the NC Zoological Park

August 30, 2001

The N.C. Zoo will celebrate Wolf Awareness Week from Saturday, October 20 through Sunday, October 28 with a number of activities.

Wolf Howling Contest: A Wolf Howling Contest will be held Saturday, October 20 and Saturday, October 27 at 1:30 p.m. The contest will be for children up to 12 years of age. This activity will take place at the Prairie Outpost.

Information table: There will be an information table at the red wolf exhibit from Saturday, October 20 to Sunday, October 28 from 11:00 am – 2:00 pm. The table will be manned by zookeepers or volunteers who will talk with interested people about red wolves and other wolf-related topics. There will be props at the table including a radio collar, replicas of canid skulls and red wolf brochures.

Arts and Crafts: Visitors can make (at home) a wolf mask or a headband that features wolf ears and/or a wolf face. If a person wears the mask or headband to the information table at the red wolf exhibit between 11:00 and 2:00 on any day from October 20 to October 28, he or she can register to be in a drawing for one of three prizes. The drawing will be held at the end of Wolf Awareness Week. This is open to all ages, and the mask or headband must be a homemade craft.

Face painting will be done on Sunday, October 21 and on Sunday, October 28 from 12:00 – 3:00 p.m. at the Prairie Outpost.

Storytelling: Educators will tell stories related to wolves during certain periods of Wolf Awareness Week. Storytelling will be conducted at the "Empty Sky" sculpture, which is located on the public walkway between the wolf exhibit and the Desert Pavilion tram stop.

Storytelling times are as follows: on Saturday, October 20, Sunday, October 21, Saturday, October 27 and Sunday, October 28--10:00 am to 12:00 pm, and from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm.

On Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday (October 24-26), storytelling will be held from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm.
